Technical Sales Engineer - Midwest/Arizona - Water Treatment/Industrial

Our client, a medium size global chemical producer specializing in areas that include mining, water treatment, food, agricultural and other specialty markets is seeking a Technical Sales Engineer based in either the Midwest (IL, MO, KS) or potentially base out their corporate sales office HQ in the Phoenix, AZ. This territory will cover a rather large geography of customers but travel will be limited to 25-50% overnight and also include attending trade shows, conferences and monthly trips to the Phoenix office.

This individual contributor role will be responsible for the sale of industrial chemicals and products into various applications including metals separation, cyanide destruction, drinking water treatment, and waste water treatment. The territory includes existing business/customer relationships, prospect and develop new accounts and price product.  This position will focus on selling value proposition, not price focused and will offer long-term solutions to the customer.  It is truly a TECHNICAL SALES position!

Key Accountabilities:
  • Develop good working relationships with the existing base of customers and distributors.
  • Identify opportunities and develop new sales for the industrial product line.
  • Develop an understanding of customers’ processes, mining and industrial product line, product applications, and competitive products.
  • Provide appropriate quotations/proposals to gain and retain business.
  • Provide assistance to resolve any product, service or administrative performance issues; work with customers to understand any issue, and quickly and effectively solve the problem.
  • Develop any necessary test protocols to prove the value of products in customer applications.
  • Clearly communicate with management providing appropriate reports on product markets, opportunities, threats or issues. 
  • Provide data and information as needed to support the annual budgeting process, and on-going performance dialogs/reviews.
  • Represent the company in a professional manner; attend trade shows and participate in other industry events.
Key Knowledge Skills and Behaviors
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Chemistry.
  • 5+ years of experience; direct experience in sales or technical customer service is preferred.
  • Successful background in value selling.  Proven capability in growing a region/territory.
  • Distribution management a plus.
  • Strong negotiating and people skills; must be comfortable working with people from the shop floor through the executive suite.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and tactfully with diverse groups of people; fluency in Spanish is a plus.
  • Must be comfortable working alone; must be self-motivated.
  • Must be numerate – must have strong math and computer skills - MS Office expertise required; SAP experience is a plus.
  • Must be willing to travel 25-50% of the time.
  • Must be capable of visiting a chemical plant environment and be able to wear any/all PPE (glasses, hardhat, work-boots, and respirator).
