Job Description
The Senior Research Scientist is responsible for collaborating with business unit personnel to solve customer problems and generate innovative technical solutions that support business growth.
More specific duties include:
- Designs/develops new high-performance Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) products for a variety of applications;
- Works closely with manufacturing to optimize the production parameters of TPU products and to assist the scale up efforts of new products;
- Stays current with scientific and technical advances and explores new chemistries, structures and processing conditions for new and unconventional applications;
- Establishes structure-property relationships in TPU's and provides technical support to manufacturing and customers;
- Establishes and maintains close working relationships with colleagues across the globe;
- Prepares technical papers/presentations and conducts technical training to customers and BASF personnel;
- Supports product launch efforts in coordination with sales & marketing team.
Results are to be achieved through experimental work using the Innovation Chain process and working closely with colleagues in the TPU business to achieve significant potential sales and contribution margins impact and to develop new and improved TPU products to drive business growth.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelors degree in chemical engineering, polymer chemistry, polymer engineering or equivalent technical discipline with at least 5 years industrial laboratory experience or PhD new graduate
- Solid knowledge of polymer characterization methods and structure/property relationships
- Experience with at least 2 of the following: DMA, TGA, DSC, Rheometer, & FTIR
Preferred Qualifications:
- Hands on experience in product development of thermoplastic elastomers(TPE)
- Working knowledge of injection molding &/or extrusion technologies & processing
- Experience formulating & processing thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU)
- Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word & PowerPoint and have the ability to learn new applications quickly
- Proficiency in German
