Job/Research Summary: This position is a hands-on first-line supervisor and individual contributor. The individual will lead and contribute to the work of a section of 10-15 engineers, project managers and support staff, who carry out projects, technical assistance, and education and outreach to deploy solar and buildings technologies in the marketplace.
The position primarily supports the DOE's Solar and Buildings Programs, but also other Federal Programs that include solar and buildings market transformation activities such as DOE’s Office of Weatherization and Intergovernmental Programs (OWIP), Integrated Deployment (ID) program, Tribal Energy Program (TEP), Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP), and solar and buildings technology deployment work funded by other Federal agencies.
The Solar & Buildings Technology Deployment section is in NREL’s Sustainable Electricity & Buildings Group in the Deployment and Industrial Programs Division. The Group’s focus is addressing barriers to solar and buildings technology deployment through outreach and education, as well as technical assistance to entities in understanding best practices, policy, project, and technology options so that they can develop their own program, policy, or project approaches.
The incumbent will work closely and collaboratively with DOE counterparts to design and implement projects and activities that achieve this focus.
Job duties and responsibilities of the position: The work has 2 primary components, the supervisory component (25-35% time) and as a technical leader\primary contributor of work in support of the goals of the Programs and the NREL organization.
As Supervisor, the incumbent, working with the Group Manager, leads the development of an overall strategic vision for the section. The supervisor manages the Section’s staff and budget of approximately $9-12 M (and growing) to meet milestones and position the section to grow its capability. The supervisor will maintain effective working relationships with program managers at NREL and DOE technology managers in order to communicate effectively regarding the group’s work, and ensure the quality of the work and appropriate effective reporting and client relationships.
The supervisor’s job includes all first line management functions including annual staff planning and performance reviews. S\he will work in collaboration with the other section supervisors and the Group manager to accomplish the overall Group objectives
The Supervisor mentors staff to insure that they are proficient in the section’s core knowledge as well as to insure that staff training is continuous and includes cross-training across the group.
As a Lead Engineer, the Supervisor shall initiate, lead and serve as an individual contributor on one or more complex or moderately complex project with moderately high impact and visibility. The project content may involve defining or implementing wind deployment projects, providing project or proposal reviews, addressing major information gaps in the market, developing analytical or informational tools, or addressing a market need such as work force development.
It may include consulting with regional, state, local, or international entities on how to implement effective solar or buildings energy deployment or demonstration projects and programs. This will include 1) project scoping, management, proposal generation and client interface; 2) some field work to advise on siting and implementation of solar and buildings energy projects; 3) mentoring and quality control of the work of junior staff and/or contractors.
Education and Experience: Masters degree or Bachelors in engineering or other relevant technical discipline, or equivalent relevant experience with ten years of relevant engineering experience related to solar or buildings energy technologies and projects. 2 years of experience supervising a technical staff.
Experience applying broad and in-depth knowledge of engineering procedures and techniques relating to the application of solar and buildings energy technologies as well as other energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies. Works independently. Previous experience in the field of energy analysis\consulting.
Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and communication (oral and written) skills. Demonstrated experience at renewable energy project definition and implementation. Demonstrated experience at generating and maintaining successful collaborations. Experience in project management of moderately complex and/or impact projects.
Preferred Experience: Experience with funding DOE related programs and projects. Thorough understanding of and successful track record of bringing together inside and outside groups work together for a common goal.
